| SEPTEMBER FESTIVALS
Ghana-Togo-Benin
Departure: Accra 30/8/2007 •
Arrival: Accra 10/9/2006
Category: Special Trip
• 12 days in Ghana Togo Benin
• overnights in hotels
The 12 days trip is the occasione to participate to three festivals:
- Fetu Afahye at Cape Coast (Ghana)
- Epe Ekpe at Glidji (Togo)
- Akwasidae at Kumasi (Ghana)
For the populations living in the region, September is time to celebrate the first and main harvest of the year.
We will be attending these great cultural events, with plenty of time available to truly soak up the atmosphere and watch the festivities. We will also be able to devote our time and attention to exploring the cultural and geographical framework within which these great celebratory events unfold.
The castles in southern Ghana, together with the peoples of the region who have for a long time been influenced by Westerners, have over the years produced a syncretic and original culture (as evidenced, for example, by the beautiful Asafo flags of the region).
Voodoo, the religion born in the south of Togo and Benin and exported abroad, will be the focus for another part of our trip. We will be able to witness the highly explosive strength of the participants’ trances, the grace and beauty of the ceremonial dress (hairstyle, clothing, beads) and the mystery of the Voodoo altars, real receptacles of vital powers.
The forest kingdoms, which since the 17th century have been enriched by selling slaves and gold, have developed refined urban cultures. On our trip we will see some of the artifacts of the royal courts and the royal palaces themselves which represent and reflect a particular style of power as well as the glorious royal celebrations that took place there.
Last but not least, our trip will take us through the regions between coastline and forest. The scenery in these areas is stunning and the vistas and views will no doubt remain in your memory as some of the most beautiful you have ever seen in your life.
