Every 10th of January in Benin is a national celebration day in honor of the traditional religion and of the cults associated with it.
Ouidah in particular is where tens of voodoo ceremonies are held gathering thousands of adepts, traditional chiefs and fetish priests.
The Voodoo, Benin - TogoOuidah is considered one the capitals of the African Voodoo. Inside the city that used to be a main port for Slave trading with its decadent Afro-Portuguese architecture, are found facing each other the temple of pythons and the catholic basilica.
The peak of the ceremony consists in the procession of the whole population, all dressed traditionally and walking to the beach in honour of all the African souls who were taken on board to the New World from there. The procession also honours all the voodoo deities living in the ocean waters and in particular Mami Wata, highly venerated and feared by her adepts.
