TRANSAFRICA GREAT EXPEDITIONS 2012-2013

Our range of Great Expeditions features journeys and itineraries exclusively offered by TransAfrica. We will stop and visit places located in the remotest parts of West Africa, where the arrival of a traveler remains an exceptional event.

Great Expeditions are not only for those who are in search of a more extreme itinerary to quench their thirst for adventure – they are for all of us who are looking for a taste of the unknown, the never-before-discovered: for those who fully recognize that a true adventure brings along with it a share of the unexpected.

The ultimate aims of our Great Expeditions are: to get in touch with some of the most isolated ethnic groups in the world; to discover the former caravan routes that have been hidden and forgotten beneath the desert sands for centuries; and to explore archaeological sites which have not undergone official search yet. The difficulty of the terrain and the technical feats it implies, even the most extreme ones, are not the main part of a great expedition – they are only the necessary means so that we can cross and explore fascinating territories. That said, they do account for an important and unforgettable part of the whole Great Expedition experience!

Great Expeditions require an entirely independent leadership, a detailed organization, a highly proficient team, well-equipped vehicles prepared for all kinds of terrain over long distances, driver-mechanic expertise, local guides, the capacity to read detailed maps – as well as information gathered from the people on the field and the ability to navigate completely off-road. TransAfrica offers all of the above and much more.

In order to make the most of these journeys, all of our itineraries are designed keeping the comfort of the traveler in mind: TransAfrica provides camping equipment, with spacious tents adaptable to different weather conditions, as well as mattresses, tables and chairs.

The rather basic way in which we travel by day is more than compensated for by our evenings around the campfire, sipping an aperitif before enjoying a fine dinner prepared by our professional chefs. Meals usually consist in European dishes, with a reasonable share of local specialties, and are served with a nice glass of French, South African or Italian wine.

All of our expeditions are led by a highly experienced guide with a deep understanding of the people and places we visit.

None of the programs listed in the calendar - travels with a single or several departure dates during the year - include the international flight from the country of origin.

Great Expeditions are directed by Alberto Nicheli.
